Muzzleloading Frequently Asked Questions
What is Muzzleloading?
Taking a step back and slowing down some. Before cartridge firearms, all guns were muzzleloaders, and we shoot the old ones and the reproductions. Anyone can put a cartridge in a gun and blow the X-ring out of a target, but, to use loose powder, I use pillow ticking, and a homemade round ball, and then tear the X-ring out of that target, well, the satisfaction level is so far off of the charts, you might not be able to find your way back. “Muzzleloading” is a discipline of patience, tried and true, your one shot in the “old days” could mean the difference in survival or feeding your family, so you learned then, as now, to make that “one shot” count. We shoot competitively, and we strive to emulate our ancestors, but, don’t let that slow you down. Even if you have a modern in-line muzzleloader for hunting, you are still a kindred spirit and more than welcome to join us. You will find that we are a very “family” based discipline, usually there are children on our firing line supervised by their parents and the atmosphere is very relaxed although very safe for all. In all, beyond the sound of shooting, I would say that the one thing you hear a lot of on our firing line, is laughter, we really try to enjoy ourselves.
How do I get started in Muzzleloading?
Third Sunday of the month, match is open to ALL shooters. Bring your muzzleloader and your “fixins” (all the other stuff) and come on out. If you are a “Greenhorn”, don’t worry, the folks on our line will be more than happy to help you if I’m busy doing something else, otherwise, I’m there for you.
