Smallbore Rifle competition is fired with single-shot .22” Long Rifle firearms, using either iron sights (no or limited optics) or with telescopic sights. Firing is done from the prone, kneeling and standing (and occasionally sitting) positions. Distances to targets are 50 feet, 50 yards, 100 yards, (and 50 meters for International competition). Time limits are very generous; essentially the time limits are designed to make sure we go home for dinner! Consequently the sport is deliberate and very precise. Scores fired by accomplished shooters tend to be surprisingly high.
The discipline here at CFR&PC also includes Air Rifle, though we are not currently holding many matches in that discipline.
These are the sports used in in NCAA Rifle competition and in Olympic Rifle competition. (Yes, rifle is an NCAA sport; you can get a scholarship to shoot on a college rifle team exactly as you can for football, track, tennis ...) Rifle is also a genuinely “coed” sport; it is the only NCAA sport in which men and women participate on the same teams with and against each other on equal terms.
